"It's still a relatively new idea," said Jodie F. Burch, M.D., F.A.C.P., who led the study. "We are still learning how to use these inhaled corticosteroids safely and effectively."
The study was part of a larger trial to assess the safety and effectiveness of high-dose inhaled corticosteroid therapy for children with mild to moderate asthma. The study is first randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study designed to evaluate the effectiveness of inhaled corticosteroid therapy in treating asthma, according to the researchers.
"These findings demonstrate the need for further randomized, placebo-controlled research to assess the safety and efficacy of inhaled corticosteroid therapy," said Burch, who is a professor of medicine, medicine and radiology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. "However, because the benefits of these medications for asthma are still being proven, we not sure if these results can be extrapolated to the general population."
The study included 20 patients ages 2 to 8 years with symptoms of mild to moderate asthma receiving at least three doses of atenolol or placebo by mouth every six hours over a course of six weeks. All patients were prescribed no other medication for at least two months prior to inclusion in the study.
The participants rated their health as excellent or excellent, and they rated their asthma symptoms as mild to moderate. At week 24, asthma-related outcomes were assessed.

The investigators also found that atenolol improved the lung function of participants with asthma-related disability more than placebo did.
"In this large, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, atenolol was associated with significant decreases in asthma-related outcomes," said Burch. "These findings suggest that, despite the fact that these medications are not approved for the general population, asthma benefit is clinically meaningful enough to justify the Best price bupropion sr use of these medications in patients with mild to moderate asthma."
The researchers concluded that while use of inhaled corticosteroids is an attractive possibility for the treatment of mild to moderate asthma, more research is needed to assess the drug's safety and effectiveness.
